The Grey Squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis) is a non-native species to the United Kingdom which was introduced from North America in the 19th Century and has been very effective in becoming the predominant squirrel species since – it is estimated there are nearly 3 million grey squirrels in the UK which has resulted in the decimation of the native red squirrel population. Grey squirrels breed between spring and summer and often have two litters per year. Typically breeding is preceded by squirrels finding their way into homes to nest which can begin as early as January. In most cases, grey squirrels will find their way into a loft space via the roof.
Problems Caused by Grey Squirrels
Aside from their ecological impact, grey squirrels can cause significant damage once they find their way into a property. Grey squirrels will often chew wires, gnaw beams and use loft insulation for nesting material. There have been cases of house fires caused by grey squirrels in lofts. How Do We Treat Them?
Effective removal of grey squirrels involves establishing how they are getting in and this will involve surveying the roof (often around the perimeter) for entry points. Any entry points that we identify are then proofed with galvanised steel mesh (a material they are unable to chew through) to prevent access. Wherever possible we will try to ensure there are no squirrels in the property when the proofing is done but this is not always guaranteed. As a result we will always deploy traps ensuring we can catch and remove any squirrels from inside a property. Visits are undertaken at frequent intervals and typically control of the problem can be achieved in 2 to 3 visits.
