The most common flea in the UK is the Cat flea (Ctenocephalides felis) followed by the Dog Flea (Ctenocephalides canis ) and as a result often (but not always) the source of a flea infestation in a home is a result of a pet being infested with fleas. Whilst their preferred host is usually a cat or a dog, in the absence of these hosts fleas will bite humans. Fleas can remain dormant without feeding for many months meaning that a property which was previously inhabited by pets can have a flea infestation which becomes active once a new host becomes available. The majority of flea eggs are found in the environment, not the host, meaning that even when a pet has been treated for fleas they can still be present in a home. .
Problems Caused by Fleas
It is believed that the Bubonic Plague was not spread by rats but by fleas transferring disease from rats to humans. In the modern world fleas are not known to transmit disease, however their presence in the home can often result in bites and an itchy feeling as though something is crawling on your skin. Fleas in a home have the capacity to spread rapidly due to their fast reproductive cycle. How Do We Treat Them?
We advise ensuring that any pets in the home have been properly treated for fleas in the first instance, this enables us to treat the property without having to worry about more fleas breeding on a pet. Treating fleas effectively in a home requires preparation before we attend a property, the most important aspect of this is to thoroughly hoover all carpets, sofas and soft furnishings to try to remove as many flea eggs as possible. The treatment we undertake involves a residual insecticide spray treatment followed by an Ultra-Low Volume (ULV) insecticide fogging of affected areas of the property. The insecticides we use have been developed specifically to target fleas during each stage of their life cycle to ensure that treatment is fast and effective
